The Great Gatsby film versions
The Great Gatsby film versions are good films that represent the book very well. The movie gives you a picture of what the scene could look like, which is fairly pleasing to the eye. As a reader of the book you get to see the old styles of clothing and cars that were used in the 1920s. The Movie also comes very close with the the lines each character says and what Nick is thinking about throughout this magnificent story.
The Great Gatsby film version also shows off what you would think the characters would look like for the most part. Paul Rudd is the perfect Nick character. He has all of the same qualities as nick and he plays the role very well. another character that comes close is Toby Stephens as Jay Gatsby. He has that smile that you would imagine Gatsby to have. The film version of The Great Gatsby does an all around good job with the book and i would recommend it as a rental.

The Men of Gatsby
There is alot of different types of men in the Gatsby. There is Tom the tough cheating rich man who went to Yale. Then there is Nick the somewhat poor man who is very independent and an all around good man. Gatsby is another fellow who gets his money through illegal ways in order to win his lover back into his own heart. All of these men are very different within the Great Gatsby.
Typically the men in Gatsby are rich men. These men usually work themselves to death or they cheat to get to the top. Most of the men in Gatsby are also very egotistic as well. They usually only care about themselves and if anything they will care for there family, but anything outside they do not really care about them. Most of the rich men in Gatsby feel that people who make less money are worthless and that they really dont matter in the world. These are the types of men in Gatsby.

The Green Light
The green light in The Great Gatsby is the light on Daisys dock. The light has a lot to do with the book and the setting. It also is a nother simbol out of many in the book. The reason Gatsby lives where he does is because across the bay he can see Daisys house. This shows how obsessed he is with Daisy and has never got over her. The light also represents the past and future that him and Daisy have had." But the green light also represents the hazy future, the future that is forever elusive, as Nick claims in the last page of the novel, "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter – to-morrow we will run farther, stretch out our arms farther…." (1) Gatsby believes that every day that goes by that him and Daisy will grow closer together and hopefuly be able to be in a relationship.

The Women of Gatsby
The women of Gatsby seem to be very selfish, spoiled, and egotistic. They do not really care about other people or else they would not go around town and fool around with a bunch of guys and get intoxicated. The women of Gatsby are given everything in the world it seems like. They have tons of jewelery, a big house and extravagant life styles. They walk around as if they are the greatest person ever and someone should bow down to them constantly.
The main women of Gatsby are Daisy Buchanan, Jordan Baker, and Myrtle Wilson. They are all flawed in there personalities. Daisy cheats on Tom with Gatsby. Jordan baker cheats at her golf tournaments so she could win. Myrtle Is going out with Tom Daisies wife and she gets pampered by tom every time they meet each other. Obviously these girls have some issues and they need to be fixed but they probably wont be fixed because they are rotten, money sucking, self centered people.

Selfish people
Who are selfish people? Selfish people are people who only do things for themselves and do not care for the well beings of others around them. These kinds of people will hurt others to get what they really want for example they will sabotage a system so that they can get money not caring if it will hurt other peoples money problems. some type of selfish people are business men, criminals, or movie stars. These people can be selfish because all of there success or failures has made them think of them as the best or as if no one else matters as long is they get what they want.
In the Great Gatsby most of the people are very selfish especially in east egg. Tom is cheating on his wife so that he can get some fun. Tom does not care for his wives feelings because he would just leave in the middle of lunch to go talk to his other girl. Tom also expects people to live up to a certain standard that even he doesnt live up to making him a very selfish person.

Dan Cody
Dan Cody was a very good friend of Gatsby and was very kind and nice. Gatsby trusted Dan very well and they were always there for each other. The way the two meet was when, “Dan Cody's yacht dropped anchor over the most "insidious flat" on Lake Superior. When Gatsby saw this, he borrowed a rowboat, and pulled out to where Cody was on the water and warned him that the "wind might catch him and break him up in half an hour."(1) This also shows Dan’s wealth and the kindness of Gatsby. The two ended up sailing around the world together over the next five years after they had meet. Dan also had a serious drinking problem that made Gatsby not want to drink, “Gatsby chose then to abstain from alcohol forever after witnessing the destructive behaviors of Cody during his periods of drunkenness.”(2) When Dan Cody past away from unknown causes he willed Gatsby 2500 dollars. But Dan’s girlfriend ended up getting it instead in court.

Mafia/Gansters
In the Great Gatsby mafia and gangsters played a huge part in the 1920s. There were all sorts of mafias in the 1920s do to prohibition and the depression. Many mafias or gangs were involved in bootlegging of alcohol and other drugs during this time. “In the public eye, the 1920s gangster and bootlegger "above the law" lifestyle brought money, fame, nice clothes, women, cars, and homes.”(1) Much like today’s society. Many people would dress or try to look like a gangster during parties or other events. The reason people liked the gangster look was because most members wore expansive nice suits and were also flashy, “Every famous gangster has a colorful name to go along with his fine suit. It's also been said that the gangster, as the American public sees him, is a creation of the mass media.”(1) Another reason this style was so in during the 1920s was because it was the time of the young and rebellion. Mafia and gang members were all about rebellion and were doing whatever they could that was illegal and could make money off. So during this time mafia and gangsters played a huge role in the writings of the Great Gatsby.

Flappers
Flappers was a certain style and attitude that women had in the 1920's that made them seem rebellious. Flappers were women who cut there hair, wore make-up, voted, and went out to have a good time. Flappers also wore shorter clothing and it shocked many people in the 1920's because it seemed very outrageous to the way things use to be. Women back then use to wear clothing that constricted them from dancing so they got rid of it and started wearing less for comfort and for more room to dance.
Flappers was first coined in Great Britain Right after the first world war to describe young women. Once the term got to the U.S the term was used to describe a giddy, attractive and slightly out of the ordinary young girl who was also somewhat foolish. Flappers was the image of young females of the 1920's and it has shaped the way girls think and dress like in today's culture.

Prohibition
Prohibition
During the 1920s prohibition came about. Prohibition ended the sale and importing of alcohol. The reason for, “Prohibition was supposed to lower crime and corruption, reduce social problems, lower taxes needed to support prisons and poorhouses, and improve health and hygiene in America.”(1) Instead of lowering crime rate and corruption it did the exact opposite. There was more crime do to prohibition because people still wanted to drink and found other ways to drink or sell alcohol. This also created a huge mafia and gang during the time of prohibition. Mafia members realized that there was a huge demand for alcohol but it also was illegal to import and sell it. This created a huge gang problem during the 1920s because gangs where fighting over the control of importing and who can sell alcohol. Prohibitions also failed at creating better hygiene and improve people’s health. Since no one could import alcohol many people started to make and sell their own alcohol that they made themselves. There was no limit or restrictions on what could be put in the drinks or even health precautions.

The time and setting in great Gatsby was during the 1920s.The 1920s was the time for youth. Almost everyone was in fashion and anything that was hip was from the younger generation. "It was a time of conservatism, it was a time of great social change." (1)Most people loved to dance and a new form of music was born that was called jazz."The Jazz Age came about with artist like Bessie Smith and Duke Ellington."(1) With the rise in music and the new culture the radio and T.V also came along with the ages. Everyone was ready for change and ready to risk what they had for a better opportunity in life and poverty. With this increase of risk and spending also come a down fall.
The 1920s was also the time of the great depression. “On October 24, 1929, later to be known as Black Thursday, the stock market began its downhill drop.”(2) By the next Tuesday the stock market had crashed and was the beginning of the great depression. With the great depression was the end of the party and better years of the 1920s. Many people lost their jobs and homes that also led to many homicides and death in the later years of the 1920s. This would mark the end of the 1920s or roaring twenties.

East Egg vs. West Egg
East and West egg are two different places but they are both very identical. East and West egg are "separated only by a courtesy bay(5)". this bay represents the people of east and west egg and how they are separated by little differences such as how they get their money and their personality towards others. Nick says that East egg and west egg "are not perfect ovals they are both crush flat at the contact end(5)". This quote deals with the geography of the two eggs and there similarity and it symbolizes the similarities in personality.
East egg is a group of people who have had their money all of their lives and never had to work for their money. They are fashionable and egotistic people that do not accept west egg because they feel more superior to them. West egg are people who are newly rich and they had to work hard to get where they are at today. West egg people want to be on the level and class as East egg people. Both eggs are people with a lot of money but they differ by the way they get there money and how it affects them.
