Prohibition
Prohibition
During the 1920s prohibition came about. Prohibition ended the sale and importing of alcohol. The reason for, “Prohibition was supposed to lower crime and corruption, reduce social problems, lower taxes needed to support prisons and poorhouses, and improve health and hygiene in America.”(1) Instead of lowering crime rate and corruption it did the exact opposite. There was more crime do to prohibition because people still wanted to drink and found other ways to drink or sell alcohol. This also created a huge mafia and gang during the time of prohibition. Mafia members realized that there was a huge demand for alcohol but it also was illegal to import and sell it. This created a huge gang problem during the 1920s because gangs where fighting over the control of importing and who can sell alcohol. Prohibitions also failed at creating better hygiene and improve people’s health. Since no one could import alcohol many people started to make and sell their own alcohol that they made themselves. There was no limit or restrictions on what could be put in the drinks or even health precautions.
